Established in 1899 by the Renault brothers Louis, Marcel and Fernand, the firm which went on to become the first French car manufacturer, started with a single prototype with a 1.75hp Dion engine and suspended rear axle whose design was soon copied by other contemporary manufacturers. By 1904 Renault began making its own engines - first a large-displacement four cylinder, followed by the AX twin - and in 1908 revealed its first six-cylinder model. In 1913, Renault presented an improved version of its 12hp model, called the DG, which was offered as a tourer, coupe, or limousine, and it sported the typical Renault alligator hood with the radiator in front of the awning. Two wheelbases were offered. All models were powered by a water cooled 2614cc side-valve in-line four-cylinder engine, mated to a four-speed gearbox, giving the Renault DG a top speed which ranged from 38 to 64 km/h depending on the body. Production of the Renault Type DG lasted until 1914.
