Automotive historians are already opining that the Porsche 911 was the most significant sports car of the twentieth century. The original 2-0-litre car made its debut at the 1963 Frankfurt Show as the 901 but a Peugeot patent on all 3-digit car names with a central zero prompted the change to 911 – after 62 examples wearing 901 badges had already been sold! By the early 1970s, US safety legislation mandated higher bumpers and the ‘whale-tail’ rear spoiler attracted controversy. Early 911s were strong performers but more power was always on the agenda and by 1984 engine capacity had grown to 3.2 litres (with 80 per cent new components). This was also the year when the ‘Carrera’ name – discontinued in 1977 – was revived. Flared guards covered wider wheels and the 1980s 911s were as brutal in appearance as the original was delicate. By the 1980s, the 911 had established its reputation much more widely among enthusiasts and the more muscular and aggressive cars of this era, especially those equipped with the 3.2-litre engine deliver high performance even by twenty-first century standards and are eminently useable as daily drivers.
