Mercedes-Benz expanded the highly regarded W124 E-Class range to include a stylish coupe version in 1987, featuring a lower roofline and pillarless side treatment in the best Stuttgart coupe tradition, the result arguably one of stylist Bruno Sacco’s finest achievements.  Built on a slightly reduced wheelbase, the interior was redesigned to accommodate four adults with individual rear seats and novel touches – including the automatic arm that offered front seat passengers the seat belts – set the coupes apart from their four-door cousins.  Offered with a range of four and six-cylinder petrol engines, the W124 range was facelifted in 1989 with the additional of the ‘Sacco planks’ and colour-coded mirrors.  The range topping 300CE was supplemented by a 24-valve version from 1990 onwards and Mercedes introduced a new 3.2-litre version of the DOHC M104 engine for the 1993 model year.  Featuring the latest KE-Jetronic fuel injection and variable valve timing, the engine was rated at 162kW (217 horsepower) at 5500rpm and 310Nm of torque at 375rpm.  Driving the rear wheels via a sophisticated five-speed auto, underneath the W124 was typically well-engineered, boasting independent front suspension via MacPherson struts and wishbones and five-link independent rear suspension, with coil springs and anti-roll bars front/rear.  An exclusive model harking back to the classic W111/112 series of the 1960s (the 320CE had a list price of $167,000 back in 1993), the W124 coupe remains a stylish, beautifully made German luxury coupe on the cusp of classic status, with prices already beginning to move upwards.  The combination of bank vault build quality, superb handling and ride make the W124-series a fabulous modern classic, one that can easily cope with modern traffic conditions.  Once plentiful on Australian roads, finding a good W124 is becoming more difficult every year but they still represent remarkable value for money considering the original cost and legendary German build quality.
