The Mitsubishi Cordia was a stylish hatchback-coupé manufactured between 1982 and 1990. Notably one of the first mass-market cars to offer an optional liquid-crystal display (LCD) instrument cluster, the front-wheel drive Cordia was available with the choice of a 65 kW or 82kW 1.6-litre, and an 84kW turbocharged 1.6-litre engine. It used MacPherson strut front suspension and a beam axle at the rear and was available with either a manual or automatic transmission. The Cordia received a mild facelift in 1983 and the option of four-wheel drive was offered in 1984. Engines were modified in 1985 for unleaded fuel and engine capacity increased to 1.8-litres with power outputs at 75 kW naturally aspirated and 101 kW in turbocharged form. In Australia, the Cordia AA series was released in late 1983, then quickly an update, titled AB Series, arrived with a different grille and other minor changes in 1984. The final AC model was upgraded to unleaded fuel in late 1985, before the model was dropped from the Australian range in 1988. Two trim levels were available, the naturally aspirated 1.8-litre GSL and the turbocharged GSR. Early (leaded) GSRs were fitted with 13-inch alloy wheels, while the later unleaded cars came with 14-inch wheels. Both engines were modified to meet local emission standards, which markedly reduced the power in both the GSR and GSL models. Japanese production was discontinued in 1990.
