Ford’s Galaxie was built in America between the model years 1959 and 1974. The Galaxie name was used for the top models in Ford's range in an attempt to capture the excitement and aura around the ‘Space Race’ of the period. In 1960 Ford introduced an all-new Galaxie design with less ornamentation. The new top-line Galaxie 500 models (two-door sedan and hardtop, four-door sedan and hardtop, and "Sunliner" convertible) offered plusher interiors, more chrome trim outside, and a few additional luxury items over and above that which was standard on the base Galaxie models. For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The 1963 model was essentially unchanged from the 1962 version, save for some general freshening and added trim, with windshields reshaped and a four-door hardtop 500/XL was added. At the beginning of the 1963 model run, the 292 Y-block V8 was replaced as the base V8 engine with the Fairlane's new small block 260. The 260 proved under-powered for the heavy full-size Ford and was replaced mid-year (coincident with the introduction of the 63 and 1/2 models) with the 289 V8 as the base engine in the range.

You’ll need a large garage or shed for this one! In Australia since June 2013 and still in its original left-hand drive configuration, this 1963 Ford Galaxie XL500 convertible is enormous and was subject to a refurbishment in the hands of the previous owner. It was taken back to bare metal and repainted in a metallic dark blue, while the undercarriage was also refurbished. A new powered black soft top was fitted too, complete with new motor. Under that huge bonnet the hearty 390ci V8 has been rebuilt, as have the brakes, and new tyres are now fitted to the widened steel rims with Moon-style caps. The big Galaxie’s paint is in good shape, as is the roof, but the body brightwork is a bit untidy, the chrome work pitted in places and the stainless trim could use a polish. Inside, the interior looks to be largely original and finished in a striking iridescent blue vinyl with matching carpets and original radio. It’s in decent condition but could warrant a little TLC. The drop-top Ford also comes with its Import papers. With presence to burn, this ’63 Galaxie convertible could be run as is or further improved; either way it’ll be a fantastic summer cruiser. Previously on Victorian club registration, the 1963 Ford Galaxie XL500 convertible is being sold here unregistered and at No Reserve.
