Description

It is a shame that the HQ Holden was never engineered for left-hand-drive because it had greater potential than any previous Holden to sell on international markets. Many observers would say it was the most beautifully styled car in the General Motors world of 1971. Here was the first Holden to offer a level of refinement and silence normally reserved for much more expensive cars. It had a superb ride with coil springs all round and very high levels of compliance in the suspension. The rubber-insulated front subframe contributed significantly to this quietness, smoothness and refinement. The new ‘forward-mounted’ steering offered greater feel than previous Holden systems. Integrated factory air-conditioning and power steering were options. Superb ventilated front disc brakes were also offered. Three levels of specification were offered: Belmont, Kingswood and Premier, but utilities and vans were offered only in the first two. The entry level Belmont utility had a 173 cubic-inch engine with three-speed column change gearbox.

History

  • More than $50K spent on paint alone
  • Blueprinted, balanced and lightly modified 253 V8
  • The world’s finest ever Holden HQ commercial

You are looking at what is almost certainly the finest Holden HQ Belmont utility that has ever existed. Think of it as a standard Belmont in much better than brand new condition, sympathetically modified in keeping with the period: it is impossible to imagine a more thorough restoration than this ute has received. Indeed, such an extraordinary re-imagining inspired the owner’s close mate to follow a similar path with his own 1979 HZ Belmont ute, also being auctioned! This saga began with a rust-free body and there have been no replacement panels. Only the best materials were used in a professional rotisserie restoration by Classic Car Restorations and the Belmont has covered just 300km since. This company supplied the ute and organised the entire restoration. The car is supplied with an invoice for $147,800 (which included purchase of the original vehicle for $35K). The paint job alone accounts for $50K: no factory-issue Holden was ever painted as well as this, let alone back in 1974!
Amazingly this Belmont still has its factory logbooks and comes with a Holden Production Report Certificate. The no-frills Belmont interior was restored to factory specification and the crashpad was reconditioned. A high quality vintage air-conditioning system has been fitted. The original matching numbers 253 cubic-inch V8 was rebuilt by renowned specialist Marty White of John White Racing who blueprinted and balanced the engine, fitted flat top pistons and a mild camshaft and ported and polished the cylinder head. A ‘quick fuel’ carburettor was sourced and the air cleaner modified to suit. The gearbox is a factory option four-speed manual. A set of genuine HQ Monaro GTS wheels have been widened to seven inches at the front and eight on the rear. Tyres are B.F. Goodrich Silvertown redwalls. With its lowered suspension and the wheel/tyre combination filling out the guards, this Belmont utility has a magnificent planted stance.
