With the proliferation of models offered by Mercedes-Benz, the CLK-Class was launched in 1997, combining the underpinnings of the compact C-Class with general styling and trim levels of the more upmarket E-Class.  Sold in both coupe and convertible forms, the CLK filled a niche between the more overtly sporting SLK and the ultra luxurious (and expensive) CL-Class.  Initially launched in four-cylinder CLK200 or supercharged CLK230 versions, a V6 model badged the CLK320 was added to the line-up in 1997, followed by an even more powerful CLK430 with a 4.3-litre V8 under the bonnet.  To create the ultimate version DaimlerChrysler turned the CLK over to the wizards at AMG, who worked their magic to upgrade the drivetrain and styling; each 5.4-litre V8 engine was hand-assembled with a forged billet steel crankshaft, balanced connecting rods and pistons, chain-driven SOHC camshafts and a 10.5:1 compression ratio to generate 362bhp and 376 lb/ft of torque.  A beefed-up five-speed automatic transmission, upgraded suspension and brakes plus stylish 17-inch AMG Monoblock alloy rims shod with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres rounded out the package.  A second generatation CLK was launched in 2003 featuring heavily revised styling in keeping with the new corporate ‘face’ adopted across the range.  Contemporary road testers referred to the CLK55 AMG as a modern day musclecar, the combination of a large naturally-aspirated V8 engine in a relatively compact two-door coupe or convertible a recipe straight out of Detroit of the ‘60s.  However the addition of modern technology like Electronic Stabiliy Control, Automatic Slip Control and Brake Assist ensured the CLK55 could put all that power to the ground.  Dispatching the quarter-mile in just 13.2 seconds, the CLK55 could reach 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds, figures that remain impressive almost two decades on.  In Cabriolet guise, the multi-layer soft top was automatically raised or lowered at the push of a button (including remotely), provided class-leading noise and temperature insulation when raised and the captivating soundtrack offered by the mighty V8 when lowered.
