1995 HSV VS Manta Wagon

Launched in April 1995, the Holden VS Commodore served as a mechanical update of the second-generation Commodore architecture, destined to assist sales before the all-new VT model in August 1997. The extent of exterior changes went not much further than a redesigned Holden logo and wheel trims. An updated Ecotec (Emissions and Consumption Optimisation through TEChnology) version of the Buick V6 engine featured which packed 13 per cent more power, an increase of 17kW over the VR, and cut fuel consumption by five per cent. Holden mated the new engine with a modified version of the GM 4L60-E automatic transmission, bringing improved throttle response and smoother changes between gears. Safety features were also improved, with a passenger airbag becoming available. The Series II update of June 1996 brought elliptical side turn signals, interior tweaks, and the introduction of a L67 supercharged V6 engine, joining the 3.8 litre Ecotec and 5.0 litre V8. HSV produced several models based on the VS, including the Manta, Clubsport, GTS, GTS-R, Maloo and Senator. The Manta was HSV’s entry-level model and was readily identified by its five-spoke 17x8 HSV alloys with 235/45 ZR17 tyres, side skirts, rear spoiler with clear stop lens, fog lamps up front and both HSV bonnet badge and 185i model ID on the boot. Mechanically there was sports suspension, a limited-slip differential and stainless-steel exhaust. Inside were sports front seats, electric windows, audio upgrade six-speaker stereo, individually numbered instrument panel badge, HSV logo embossed gear knob with leather trim, and the HSV vanity pack. Just 180 VS-model Mantas were produced in total, almost all sedans, however six wagons were also made to special order.
