The R107 SL-class was first introduced in 1971 and was manufactured for an amazing18 years. During this time it continued to grow Mercedes’ SL-class legend, with its cutting-edge technology, powerful drivetrains, distinctive looks, high accessory levels and price. Heavier than its predecessor by around 135kg, it was given the unflattering nickname 'Panzerwagen' both because of its seemingly bullet-proof construction and weight but was a big step forward technically under the skin. Trailing arms in the rear suspension replaced the antiquated swing axle layout of previous versions, for instance. A key facelift for the 1986 model year saw the entry level 280 SL being replaced by the 300 SL, powered by a 3.0-litre straight six with a semi-electronic Bosch fuel injection system replacing the purely mechanical injection seen previously. It produced 138kW and drove through a four-speed automatic gearbox. Though not yet seen as a full-blown classic, the later R107 series cars are technically interesting, with robust build quality, smooth drivelines and comfortable interiors combining to make them a solid everyday proposition for those who want to drive something more individual than a modern.
