Bedford was a brand of commercial vehicles manufactured in the UK by Vauxhall Motors, a subsidiary of multinational corporation General Motors. Established in April 1931 Bedford produced light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks that were sold throughout the world. The Bedford HC is a small commercial made from 1938. It shared its running gear with the H-series Vauxhall 10-4 saloon. Production of civilian vehicles ceased during World War II however the HC van re-entered production following hostilities and was joined by the heavier duty Bedford JC, which itself was replaced by the higher-roofed Bedford PC after the war. From the end of 1939, the JC was also built by Holden in Australia, in seven different body styles. Variations of the Coupé Utility were the most common model, with panel vans also available. Australian built JCs had split windshields, a detail that continued on the succeeding PC model as the smaller panes were cheaper and easier to replace given Australia's gravel roads. The PC was also assembled here from parts shipped from England. The bodywork behind the cowl was built in Australia and was very different from British models, with different doors with rounded tops and a much lower roofline. Holden offered four body styles of its own: a cowl and chassis, a Wellside Coupé Utility, a Panel Van, and a Coupe Utility (as here).
