Designed by Willie G Davidson and Louie Netz, Harley-Davidson’s legendary Fat Boy was a retro-styled cruiser first seen in 1990 that became a staple in the line-up over the next three decades.  Based on the Softail, the Fat Boy embodied the “Retro-Tech” philosophy adopted by Harley-Davidson, combining classic Harley styling cues with the latest technology.  The Fat Boy employed Harley’s air-cooled V-twin Evolution 80-cid engine, electronic V-Fire III ignition, five-speed gearbox, Gates Kevlar Poly Chain belt drive and disc brakes all round, along with its own unique styling touches.  These included two fully cast solid disc wheels with 16-inch tyres, all-steel front mudguard and a chrome-dipped shotgun-style dual exhaust system.  Famous for its role in the movie Terminator 2, the Fat Boy has made numerous film and television appearances, including Sons of Anarchy and CSI: Miami.  Steadily updated through the 1990s, notable changes to the FLSTF’s specification including a move to the 88-cid Twin Cam engine for the 2000 model year followed by an even bigger displacement (96.7-cid) motor in 2007 along with a new six-speed transmission.  A “darker, lower, meaner” new variant dubbed the Fat Boy Lo appeared in 2010 with the lowest seat height of any Harley to date but remained faithful to the original design.  Although it remained a healthy seller in the Harley range for several years, production of the Fat Boy series was always limited, virtually guaranteeing future classic status.
