1939 Triumph 6S 600SV (Solo) Motorcycle

Produced from 1937 to 1939, the Triumph 6S (also known as the De Luxe) – the ‘6’ indicating its capacity and the ‘S’ its side-valve configuration – was created specifically for the sidecar market with a model that was more affordable than the V-twins and fours that typically served that purpose in those days. The 6S replaced the 650cc, twin-cylinder, side-valve Model 6/1 in Triumph's range. It was developed using similar parts as the original Speed Twin but with a 597cc single side valve engine rather than the OHV twin of the 5T. Utilising a tubular steel frame, 19in spoked wheels and 7in drum brakes, the 6S featured a single cylinder side valve 597cc engine, measuring 84mm x 108mm, with a 5.6:1 compression ratio, good for 18bhp at 4800rpm. It was equipped with a four-speed, foot-change gearbox, a Lucas Magdyno lighting and even had an electric horn, though a rear brake light was an optional extra. Versions produced for use with a sidecar had different gear ratios and a slightly shorter front chain. Production of the 6S ended in 1939 as Triumph shifted to producing military models for the War Department.
