Elfin Sports Cars Pty Ltd was founded in South Australia in 1959 by Garrie Cooper, who would go on to be a champion race driver as well as a successful designer and builder of his Elfin racing and sports-racing cars. Cooper died suddenly in 1982 from a burst aorta after a history of heart issues, at the age of 46. Following his death Cooper’s father Cliff completed outstanding orders, including six new generation Formula Vees, before offering the business for sale. The firm was bought by Tasmanian racing patron Don Elliott, driver Tony Edmondson and mechanic Jon Porter, who re-established the provision of parts and service to existing owners. In 1993 Murray Richards acquired Elfin and built a new generation Elfin Clubman called the Type 3. In failing health, he sold Elfin to Bill Hemming a year later and the Type 3 entered production in both turn-key and kit form. Based on Garrie Cooper’s very first Elfin design, the minimalist Clubman Type 3 was powered by a supercharged Toyota 4AG ZE DOHC engine producing 125kW at 6400rpm and, weighing just 600kg, delivered breathtaking performance. Just 70 were built between 1998 and 2007 as Elfin also began a collaboration with Holden, revealing a concept MS8 Streamliner at the Melbourne International Motor Show in 2004. Limited production of two versions of the MS8 began in March 2006 and soon after the business was sold to Tom Walkinshaw (owner of HSV/Walkinshaw Performance), and production units were retailed Australia-wide via HSV dealerships in each state. Following Walkinshaw’s death in December 2010, ownership of Elfin remained vested in his estate... however, there has been no further production of any Elfin cars since March 2012.
