Introduced in 1966, Toyota’s Corolla is one of the great automotive success stories, overtaking the Volkswagen Beetle to become the world’s best selling car in the 1990s, chalking up more than 40 million sales by 2013.  Launched in May 1970, the second generation Corolla again featured a rear-wheel drive platform but employed a longer 2335mm wheelbase and revised front suspension, along with more curvaceous exterior styling.  The range of body styles included both two and four-door sedans, a stylish coupe and even a station wagon and panel van, while trim levels ran from the base Standard model and intermediate Deluxe to the luxury Hi-Deluxe.  A range of four-cylinder engines was available (including 1200, 1400 and 1600 variants), along with a choice of transmissions, while some markets also benefited from optional front disc brakes, air conditioning and an AM/FM stereo.  Improvements made during the KE20’s production run included built-in head restraints, improved ventilation, radial tyres and better suspension.  Manufactured in Japan and Indonesia, Toyota also assembled the Corolla at its Australian facility in Port Melbourne from 1968 until 1999 and the KE20 became the second-best selling car after the Volkswagen Beetle.  Renowned for its outstanding reliability and affordable qualities, the humble Corolla is a Japanese classic in the making, with few survivors left on the road.
