The BMW Three Series has long been regarded as the best compact sports saloon on the market, a reputation founded in the mid-1970s with the E21 series and further enhanced through the 1980s with the second generation E30 series.  Externally, the E30's appearance was similar to the twin headlight versions of its E21 predecessor, however there were various detail changes that gave it a fresh look. Inside, the interior was also modernised and, as way the way of BMWs of the era, very driver focussed.  Combining high quality engineering and superb build quality with plenty of performance from a wide range of four and six-cylinder engines, the E30 Three Series saw a significant expansion of body styles, including two and four-door saloons, touring estate and full convertible models.  It was the stylish convertible that captured most of the attention, featuring a fully retractable hood and beautifully appointed interior.  In 320i guise, the BMW was powered by a 2-litre in-line six-cylinder engine developing 125bhp and was available in either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic form.  In the 1980s a BMW Three Series Convertible was the dream of every self-respecting yuppie but with the passing of time this image has been shaken off and these cars are now regarded as affordable future classics.
