When Ford launched its astonishing new Mustang as a 1964 ½ model, the range comprised a notchback coupe (‘Hardtop’) and a convertible, with the radical fastback variant following some months later. The first of what would become known as ‘pony’ cars was the inspiration of marketing guru Lee Iacocca. (When a product clinic was held it was found that very few participants saw themselves as prospective customers; they perceived such a slick looking machine as way out of their price range!) Iacocca’s genius in using Falcon componentry to make a budget-priced sporty model meant Mustang demand sped ahead of supply: one inspired hotcake merchant put up a sign – our hotcakes are selling like Mustangs!
