Description

Introduced to celebrate the accomplishments of legendary motorcycle race ace Mike Hailwood, the 1000 MHR (Mike Hailwood Replica) Mille arrived in 1984 as a replacement for the already potent 900 MHR. The legendary V-Twin engine was air-cooled and employed Ducati's trademark desmodromic valves with revised bevel drive. Bored and stroked to achieve 973cc, the 1000 MHR used a lightweight tube frame and all the latest-tech componentry, with a fairing designed to mimic the race bikes Hailwood used to such good effect. The new engine ran Nikasil barrels and a one-piece nitride crankshaft to ensure reliability, while an important addition was electric start. A hydraulic dry clutch operated a five-speed manual gearbox. These MHR Ducati's are truly sought-after today and can still compete with modern bikes for feel on the road, with undoubted charisma thrown in for good measure.

History

- Limited Edition Ducati 'MHR Mille'
- Believed only 199 examples built for 1985
- Most collectible of these limited-edition bikes

Mike Hailwood needs no introduction to students of motorcycle racing around the world, and Ducati certainly knew that when it created its homage to the British ace’s racer. The “Mille” from 1985 is the last of the version produced and boasted an increase to 973cc, as well as a much-needed electric start system. Our example here is beautifully original with its signature red-and-green paintwork in good condition, as indeed are the gold 18” wheels, the black vinyl seat and all the other details. Fitted with the factory optioned Conti mufflers. The bike was imported from Japan in late 2014, and spent time in QLD over the next 4 years with a  passionate collector who undertook much mechanical work and regular servicing during that period, before coming into the current collection. With only a small number of these Mille’s made in 1985, it is one of the most collectible Mike Hailwood tribute Ducatis of all. Previously on full QLD registration, this Mike Hailwood Mille is being offered for sale unregistered, with a copy of the import approval, receipts for work carried out and parts purchased.

Note: Shannons advise that all potential buyers research and inspect motorcycles before purchase to authenticate originality and condition as a pre-purchase inspection report is not carried out on these vehicles.
