Ford's legendary Mustang is an automotive dynasty spanning an extraordinary five decades of continuous production, with no end in sight for the original - and best - Pony Car. First seen in late 1964, the Mustang was soon breaking all sales records, with production surpassing a million units by 1966. Having left the Mustang largely unchanged for the first couple of years, Ford decided it was time for a revamp in 1967, thanks in part to new challengers like Chevrolet's Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. The look for 1967 was bigger all round - longer, wider and with more interior space, and revised styling front and rear. But it was still instantly recognisable as a Mustang. Inside, the dashboard was redesigned, and a fold-down rear seat added to increase luggage space in the fastback model. The range of options was further extended, with a wider choice of engines (from the base six-cylinder through to the 289-ci V8 in various states of tune and - for the first time - the availability of a 390-ci big-bock V8) and several transmissions. Once again, the Mustang was available in three equally attractive body styles, the convertible, notchback coupe and fastback. One of the more sought-after options was the GT Equipment Group (any automatic GT was now badged GTA), a package that included power front disc brakes, dual exhausts (with chrome quad outlets) and grille-mounted fog lamps. A fantastic choice for the classic car buyer wanting a good looking, affordable slice of American muscle, the Mustang remains a perennial collector car favourite.
