The Buick LeSabre model was produced by General Motors between 1959 to 2005. LeSabre is French for sabre and the name originated with the 1951 GM Le Sabre show car designed by Harley Earl, which introduced the world to aircraft-inspired design elements such as a wrap-around windshield and tail fins. The Buick LeSabre was originally offered in a full line of body styles, except between 1965-1969, when its station wagon variant was dropped. The 1975 Buick LeSabre was the first to require use of unleaded gasoline due to the advent of the catalytic converter and the line-up that year included a coupe and two sedans, while the premium LeSabre Custom model offered a coupe, two sedans, and the only convertible in the Buick range. Engine offerings were the standard 5.7-litre V8 (350 CID) or optional 7.5-litre V8 (455 CID). Bodylines on the 1975 were somewhat softer than the 1974 model, featuring round side-by-side headlights and a cross-hatched patterned grille that flowed across the front of the car. Turn signals were in the front bumper. The iconic Buick three-hole 'ventiports' were moved from the bonnet to the front fenders. There were slightly larger taillamps than the 74, with the back-up lights positioned in the centre broken up by the license plate. Inside, a new flat instrument panel shared with the Electra and Riviera replaced the wrap-around cockpit dash of previous years and featured a horizontal sweep speedometer that included kilometre readings. Otherwise, the interior trimmings received only minor revisions. LeSabre convertible production was at its lowest ebb in the years 1971 to 1975, hence 1975 was the final year for the LeSabre Convertible, with around 5300 examples rolling off the assembly lines. In 1977, the LeSabre was downsized along with other GM full-size models, and henceforth was available only in pillared coupe, sedan and wagon body styles.
