In production from April 1966 through to January 1968, the Holden’s HR series was a clever update of the previous HD, featuring revised styling and the clean, modern lines still look good today. Thanks to its wider track and lower overall height, plus revised suspension and lower profile tyres, the HR’s handling was a big improvement and the new Holden enjoyed a much more comfortable ride. Mechanical changes included two new versions of the red engine, the base 161-cid unit supplemented by an optional 186-cid motor developing 145 horsepower, both significantly quieter and smoother in their operation. Holden offered the choice of Powerglide automatic transmission or a three-speed manual gearbox and a free-flow exhaust system was also new. The HR range of Standard, Special and Premier models received updated interiors and the long list of optional extras included a limited-slip diff, power disc brakes, power steering, a tinted windscreen and two-tone paint. The Premier differed in various ways from lesser models, having the 186-cid engine as standard (the X2 and 186S were optional), along with Morrokide upholstery, woodgrain inserts on the door trims, dash and horn bar and a front bench seat as a no-cost option, plus stainless steel side window surrounds, sill and wheelarch mouldings. Holden’s marketing described the HR as “Turbo-Smooth” and good examples of the model are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
