With the advent of the Eighties, legendary Modenese company Maserati began to focus on building smaller, high performance luxury coupes to compete with the likes of BMW, starting with the original Biturbo.  Unveiled in December 1981, at the heart of the new model was a 90-degree V6 engine with twin turbochargers at a time when any form of forced induction was still something of a novelty, boosting output to an impressive 180 bhp from just 2-litres.  The first Biturbos were sold in coupe form, with the terrific styling by Giugiaro's Ital Design studio, but the range was soon expanded to include both a four-door sedan and convertible and the engines enlarged to 2.5-litres.  Introduced in 1987, the 228 was a credible attempt by Maserati to push the Biturbo series further upmarket, adding a number of unique styling and luxury features.  The 228’s styling was subtly revised on a longer, wider platform and featured a prominent grille with the famous Trident, plus unique 15-inch alloy wheels. The Tipo 473 engine featured three valves per cylinder technology, electronic fuel injection and developed a very healthy 255 horsepower from its’ 2.8-litres, a significant jump from the original Biturbo’s output.  Performance figures were correspondingly impressive, the top speed rising to 225 km/h.  There is just one word to describe the interior of the 228 - sumptuous.  From the soft leathers to the elegant trademark clock, the ambience of the cockpit is in stark contrast to the more clinical interiors of its German rivals.  The long list of standard equipment included hand-stitched leather upholstery, electric windows, central locking and power steering, while ABS was optional.  Maserati produced just 469 228s between 1987 and 1991, with right-hand drive market cars accounting for around ten per cent of total production.  The 288 is a stylish, exceedingly rapid yet very affordable Latin supercar that will, with proper maintenance, provide many years of reliable and immensely rewarding driving.
