Ford’s F-series pickups have been in constant production since their introduction way back in 1948 and the fabulous F100 of 1953 proved Dearborn’s designers were capable of combining practicality with good looks. Since 1978, the F-series has been the best selling truck in America; indeed by 1987 it had become the best selling vehicle in the land, displacing passenger cars for the first time. The pick-up truck had, by the 1990s, evolved a long way from the crude load-carriers of earlier generations and top-of-the-line models now rivalled luxury cars in terms of equipment levels. Although the F150 would never be described as a sophisticated vehicle – it’s primary purpose has always been that of a workhorse – Ford did add safety features like anti-lock brakes in 1987. Powering the trucks were a wide range of six or V8 engines and a choice two or four-wheel drive. For 1990, the same basic styling and platform that had served the F150 since the 1980s was still in evidence, little changed since the last major facelift of 1987. For American buyers three different trim levels offered, the base Custom, XL and XLT and four wheelbase lengths (116.8-inches or 133-inches and Supercab models in 138 or 155-inches), with drive to either the rear or all four wheels. Australian buyers were given less of a choice, with only the cab chassis or styleside ute sold here, powered by a 5.0-litre EFI V8 with either a five-speed manual or a three-speed auto. Tough as nails, the F150 is perfect for someone wanting a classic alternative to the plastic trucks made today.
