The Chevrolets produced between 1955 and 1957 have earned the nickname “Tri-Five” and are held in high regard by collectors for their classic “Jet Age” styling and more importantly, the introduction of the classic small-block V8 engine. With five main bearings, overhead valves operated by pushrods and individual rockers, the motor quickly gained cult status thanks to its inherent smoothness, high-revving ability and impressive power output and proved a winner, both on the track and the drag strip. Chevrolet offered a wide selection of body styles, from basic sedans to hardtop coupes, a convertible and even the unique Nomad sports wagon. Three distinct models were offered, from the base level One-Fifty through the intermediate Two-Ten, with the Bel Air, named after the ritzy Hollywood suburb, topping the line-up. The Two-Ten featured additional standard equipment, including armrests, a cigarette lighter, glove compartment light and stainless steel trim, along with metal brightwork, while the Bel Air featured an even more luxuriously appointed interior, with deep pile carpeting, unique chrome moldings and chrome disc wheel covers. Although the trusty Stovebolt six was still made, the new V8 offered more power whilst being lighter and soon became a favourite with racers and rodders alike, earning the 1955-1957 Chevrolets the title “The Hot Ones”. Indeed, the 1955 model started something of a renaissance for Chevrolet, appealing to a new generation of car buyers and setting the standard for the brand for years to come.
