Citroën's innovative Traction Avant was launched in 1934 with a long list of interesting technical features, making it one of the most influential cars of all time. The modern, low-slung styling devoid of running boards or superfluous ornamentation was a product of the advanced monocoque construction and front-wheel drive layout, while hydraulic brakes, independent front suspension, rack and pinion steering and torsion bars made the Traction a trendsetter that would ultimately remained in production for more than two decades. Offered in a complex array of different body types and mechanical specifications over the years, the original 11CV (or Light 15 as it was dubbed in England) with the 1911cc four-cylinder engine and Berline (saloon) coachwork proved the most enduring Traction of all. Post-war cars were updated with wing-mounted indicators, a larger boot and straight bumpers in 1952, while the 11D model of 1955 had 60 horsepower, improving acceleration and top speed. Tractions were also built in Belgium and at Slough in England, the latter distinguished by having Lucas 12-volt electrics, leather upholstery and were generally better equipped than their French counterparts. Slough-built Tractions were also supplied to Australia and New Zealand, with around 3,000 thought to have been imported here, fitted with additional ground clearance and an oil-bath air filter to cope with local condition. Only available in black prior to 1953, the Traction had proven popular during the War with the French Resistance and was often described as the gangster's favourite means of getaway car, so much so that the Gendarmerie Nationale soon began ordering Citroën's of their own. Instantly recognisable and with a cult following around the world, the Traction Avant is an excellent proposition as a classic car today - the excellent ride, handling and braking mean it can be enjoyed in company with modern traffic - while a healthy club scene in Australia ensures plenty of events and support for the owner.
