Introduced in late 1927 as a 1928 model, Ford's Model A was a milestone car in the history of the Blue Oval, successfully replacing the long lived and much-loved Tin Lizzie. Almost everything on the Model A was new, from the L-head 201-cid four-cylinder engine to the 103.5-inch wheelbase chassis. With 40 horsepower on tap, the Model A's output was virtually double that of the Model T's motor, while the ride was vastly improved thanks to redesigned front and rear axles and Houdaille double-action hydraulic shock absorbers. Four-wheel mechanical brakes were standard equipment and the Ford proved remarkably easy to drive by the standards of the day thanks to its conventional controls, the Model T's complex planetary transmission giving way to a sliding gear three-speed box. The Model A was available in with a vast array of body types, ranging from open tourers through to deluxe sedans, with the two-seat roadster the most sporting style available. Options included a side mount spare, luggage rack, a radiator ornament and stone guard. Although one of the cheapest Model As on sale when new, roadsters are know arguably the most sought after and valuable variant of all, highly prized by collectors and hot rodders alike. From December 2nd, 1927 - the date it first went on sale - the Model A proved a huge success for the Ford Motor Corporation, with 633,594 built in the first calendar year. Unlike the Model T, the A was destined for a much shorter production life, giving way to the new V8 at the end of 1931 but Ford still managed to produce almost five million units overall.
