Named after Enzo Ferrari's son, Alfredino, the first Dino was a V6-powered racing prototype and the name thereafter applied to any Ferrari powered by an engine in this configuration. The first 150 Dinos built had a 2-litre engine and aluminium bodywork but from 1969 a 2.4-litre version, the 246 GT, was marketed with a slightly longer wheelbase. The V6 had twin overhead camshafts per bank and was fed by triple Weber carburettors, delivering 195 bhp to the rear wheels through a five-speed transaxle. Performance figures were impressive, with a top speed in the region of 146 mph. The Dino's fully independent suspension derived from racing practice, endowing it with fabulous handling, and disc brakes all round ensured excellent stopping capability.
The GTS version of the 246 Dino arrived at the Geneva Salon in March 1972. It featured a removable targa roof panel that could be stowed behind the seats, the chassis being reinforced with extra bracing along the sides and front of the engine frame. Visibly the GTS had no rear three-quarter windows, these being replaced by a bank of three vents carved out from each sail panel.
Production of both the GT and GTS came to an end in 1974, with just over 3700 Dino's having been delivered since the spring of 1968 in GT or GTS format. Of these just 1274 were the GTS model and only 254 of these were built in right-hand drive configuration.
Today the 246 Dino is recognised as a fully fledged classic Ferrari and prices have been climbing steadily upwards as collectors come to fully appreciate the timeless styling, exemplary performance and incredible character imbued in these Italian masterpieces.
