Holden's landmark HK model saw the introduction of two significant new models, with the fastback Monaro pitched as the new hero car and a luxurious flagship model christened the Brougham, both announced six months after the Belmont, Kingswood and Premier models went on sale. Showing a strong influence from parent company GM, the latest Holden featured an all-new body on a longer, wider platform that offered significantly more interior space. The HK also came with a much wider choice of engines and transmissions including - for the first time - a Chevrolet-sourced small-block V8. Pitched squarely at Ford's Fairlane, the upmarket Brougham was visually distinguished from lesser models with unique sheetmetal at the rear, particularly the extended boot and tail light treatment, creating the impression of a much larger and more impressive looking car. With the 307-cid V8 and Powerglide transmission as standard, the Brougham also featured power front disc brakes, power steering, a vinyl roof, Brocade upholstery, heater/demisters and carpeting included in the list price of $3,855. Forerunner to the Statesman, the Brougham sold in comparatively small numbers and few survivors are seen on the road today. As a luxury cruiser with its uniquely American influenced styling, the Brougham is a real head turner today yet remains largely overlooked by Holden enthusiasts.
