Ford's 1949-1951 model range represented the Blue Oval's first all-new post-war design, built around a new chassis and boasting an aerodynamic, cleanly-styled new shape. Underneath, the same six-cylinder and flathead V8s remained but the transverse rear springs were done away with, being replaced by longitudinal springs for a much improved ride. Two trim levels were available in 1949, the base level and Custom but for 1950 these became the Deluxe and Custom Deluxe models respectively, with only minor changes to styling and equipment. Although the 1951 models also saw no major improvements, the revised grille - with signature ?twin spinners? replacing the single large central one, gave the '51 Ford a unique look that saw it become an instant classic. The Deluxe models were only sold as a two or four-door sedan or as a coupe but the Deluxe Custom could also be ordered as a County Squire station wagon, a convertible or stylish new Victoria hardtop coupe. As in previous years, buyers had a choice between the 226-cid six-cylinder (with a single barrel carburettor and 95 horsepower) or the 239-cid V8 (with a two-barrel carburettor and 100 horsepower) and new for 1951 was the two-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission, a $92 optional extra across the range. Twin Spinner Fords have long been popular with modifiers and customisers around the world, particularly here in Australia where they have something of a cult following.
