Replacing the much loved Finnies, Mercedes-Benz' Neue Klasse of compact saloons were introduced in January 1968 in either four-cylinder petrol or diesel (W115) or six-cylinder (W114) form and sold in unprecedented numbers - almost 1.5 million were made before the W123 range replaced them in 1976. With crisp, modern styling by the talented Paul Bracq and an advanced specification that boasted independent suspension all round, doing away with the swing axles at the rear, four-wheel disc brakes and a range of safety features, the compacts (often referred to as /8s in deference to the year or their launch) were also built to a remarkably high standard. Offered between 1968 and 1973, the 220 had a 105 bhp four-cylinder engine that propelled the car to a top speed of 170 km/h. The 2197cc unit had a single overhead camshaft, with a single Stromberg carburettor. All 220s came with an improved four-speed manual gearbox, with the option of a new automatic transmission, now with four forward speeds, while power steering was now an option on some models and standard on others. Radial tyres were also a major improvement, contributing to better roadholding and ride. Today, the W114/115 range offers inexpensive, high quality family motoring and - with a ready supply of spares - will continue to give years of reliable service if looked after correctly.
