First released for public viewing at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1989 the all new 500SL was the top of the line for the whole Mercedes-Benz range. With a new look body, coupled with a new V8 engine that featured 4 overhead cam shafts and four valves per cylinder, this new age engine offered very spritely performance with 326Hp @ 5,500 RPM and 0 - 100Km/h took only 6.2 seconds. all this in a luxury sports convertible. The R129 SL-Class Mercedes replaced the wonderful but ageing R107 series in 1989 and offered a sleek new design with vast technological advancements that prepared Mercedes for life in the 1990s. Initially the six-cylinder 300 SL was joined by the flagship 500 SL and its 240kW, 5.0-litre quad-cam V8, matched to a mandatory four-speed automatic transmission. Automatic climate control, 10-way adjustable leather electronic memory seats, driver's air bag (and passenger from 1991) and an automatic pop-up roll bar highlighted the interior while outside the headlights had separate washers and the removable hardtop had a heated glass window. There was even an early version of stability control to go with the anti-lock braking system. The SL and S-class Mercedes were always at the technological forefront, and their advancements inevitably trickle down to lesser models. Even today they are appealingly-styled, comfortable, safe and powerful driving companions.
