The Cezeta motorscooter was originally launched in the 1950s. Known for its distinctive styling, they were initially built by Czechoslovakian company Ceska Zbrojovska Strakonice (CZ) and production eventually spread to 20 countries at the peak of demand. For 1957, the CZ 501 was released, with space-age design including a prominent nose section which gave it the affectionate nickname,'The Pig'. Designed with rider comfort in mind, the 501 could carry up to 15kg of luggage and had foot-mounted pedals with a front plexiglass panel which shielded the rider from bad weather. The single-cylinder, 172cc engine was mounted in the rear. For 1960 an improved design known as the CZ 502 was released to the market. It featured all of the 501's benefits but carried a new Jawa engine of 175cc, which had a single (rather than dual) outlet exhaust. Twin shock absorbers were now featured on the rear as well as the front, and a choice of 6 or 12-volt electrics was available. A total of 72,000 502s were produced with some examples built in New Zealand under contract to N.Zeta from 1960.
