An entirely new type of Harley-Davidson, the V-Rod, was introduced in 2002 with a powerful new liquid-cooled 69-cid Revolution engine as its centrepiece. The motor was a real break with tradition in having twin-overhead cams, a forged one-piece crankshaft, Mahle pistons and sequential port electronic fuel injection while final drive is via a Kevlar belt for smoother, quieter performance. Developing 115bhp and 74lb/ft of torque, the Revolution engine certainly delivered blistering performance. The hot-rod styling of the V-Rod was also a new direction, with the hydro-formed perimeter frame running a 67.5-inch wheelbase (the longest yet found on a Harley) and the whole thing tightly wrapped in polished and anodised aluminium bodywork. With a 38-degree fork giving the bike a real chopper feel, the V-Rod was just about the coolest thing on wheels and unusual details like the solid disc wheels, headlamp binnacle and instrument cluster really set the bike apart. Without doubt the Harley-Davidson V-Rod is a future collectors item.
