Holden took until October 1974 to replace the hugely successful HQ range, with updated sheetmetal and number of improvements beneath the skin. The facelifted HJ's styling was now more angular, with revised frontal treatment and wraparound tail lights on the sedans. The HJ model range consisted of the entry level Belmont, the mid-range - and ever popular - Kingswood and the more upmarket Premier along with commercial derivatives, plus the Monaro (in both two- and four-door versions) and station wagon and commercials. Holden offered a wide choice of engines, including both 2.8-litre and 3.3-litre sixes and 4.2-litre and 5.0-litre V8s. On the Kingswood the 3.3-litre was standard equipment, as were power front disc brakes. Inside the HJ boasted improved seats that were both more comfortable and safer thanks to integrated head restraints while the dash featured a return to the strip-style speedo of earlier years. The Kingswood captured the heart of a nation during Seventies and became an Aussie legend, such was the popularity of the evergreen family sedan, to the extent that a television show was named in its honour. Today the Kingswood is an affordable and usable classic, easy to work on and with a V8 under the bonnet, still capable of providing enjoyable motoring.
