The European Car of the Year for 1978 was Porsche's spectacular new 928, the futuristic lines and front-engined layout a complete break with tradition. The changes didn't end there - an all new 90-degree V8 engine and luxurious cabin helped make the 928 a grand tourer par excellence, although the rear transaxle ensured perfect weight distribution and superb handling. Designed for cruising the autobahns at high speed, the majority of 928's were specified with automatic gearboxes but the new car was also a very capable performer when the road got a little twisty - it should be noted that a large number of factory test drivers, when given a choice of which Porsche model they would have as a company car - chose the 928.
