The De Tomaso Longchamp came from the pen of the same man that designed the more illustrious Pantera- Tom Tjaarda of Ghia. It was introduced to the world at the 1972 Turin Motor Show and was based on De Tomaso's previous four-door sedan, the Deauville. Incorporating a shortened Deauville wheelbase with two doors and 2+2 seating, it utilised similar hardware underneath including the 351ci Ford Cleveland V8 backed by either the five-speed ZF manual or three-speed C6 Ford automatic transmission.

The Longchamp had a desirable list of standard features including leather interior, four-wheel discs, all independent suspension and power steering to make for an effective cruiser.

Production commenced in 1973 with a second series brought in for 1980. That year also saw two further models added to the range, an upgraded GTS and 'Spyder' version.

Longchamp production totalled 409 units, split between 395 coupes and 14 spyders, with only a handful being delivered new to Australia.
