Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Yamaha introduced their 250cc TD2 race bike in 1969. Ironically it was that year that the Yamaha factory withdrew from racing in the 250cc World Championship due to certain ruled that were changed for that season. The TD2's therefore entered the 1970 championship through numerous privateer operations. Briton Rodney Gould would ride on to win the 1970 World Championship for 250cc bikes, while Aussie Kel Curruthers won that year's Isle of Man TT race in the lightweight 250cc class, also aboard a TD2.
