Since 1948, Ford's legendary F-Trucks have maintained a reputation for hardiness that has seen the series continue in production to this day. The range has been a massive sales success; at one point it was the best-selling vehicle in the United States for 24 consecutive years and it remains the best-selling truck to this day, a title it has held for 34 years straight. The Eighties saw the debut of the seventh-generation of the series, with more squared off, rugged styling. The F-100 was the mainstay of the range in the Australian market and received two engine options, with the 4.1-litre inline six and 5.8-litre 351 'Windsor' V8, and either three-speed auto or four-speed manual transmissions. There were also two trim levels, the entry F100 and upgraded XLT with more interior refinements and accessories. The range soldiered on locally despite North America moving on to the F-150 as their new entry model, surviving a period with only the 4.1-litre engine until a re-jigged 4.9-litre Windsor V8 returned to see it through to 1987. From that point, the larger F-150 also took over to see out the decade in Australia.
