Chevrolet initially introduced the Deluxe nameplate for the 1941 model year, powered by a 216.5ci version of the inline six known as the 'Blue Flame'. Firstly only available in a four-door sedan body, 1942 introduced a fast-back 2-door to the range before production was halted due to the effects of World War 2. Post-war the name was resurrected, and the initial styling ran from 1945-48. 1949 saw modernised styling across the Chevrolet range and the Deluxe was no exception, being shifted to flagship status in the Chevrolet range. Power from the old 216.5ci Blue Flame remained at 90bhp though a sportier 235ci version with 105bhp was also offered for the 1950 model year. Transmission choices increased also, the two-speed automatic becoming optionally available alongside the existing three-speed manual. These models were really transitional as Chevy moved forward after the war, moving from quite conservative styling to something with more boldness to reflect the increasing confidence of the United States in this period.
