Description
Seen as perhaps the premium American auto brand in the lead up to World War 1, Pierce Arrow struggled to maintain pace with updated local offerings from Cadillac and Packard in the Twenties. Continuing with their familiar large-capacity six when contemporaries were looking at eight-cylinder options, Pierce Arrow had to play catchup. The Series 80 was introduced in late 1924 to satisfy the demands of a wider market. It was smaller than their traditional offerings and designed to compete within a lower- though still expensive- price bracket. Powered by an L-Head six of just over 4.7-litres, the Series 80 was built on a 130-inch wheelbase and was offered in seven body styles, expanding to 12 before production was finalised in 1927. At almost half the price of the larger Series 33, the Series 80 sold at a much higher rate and provided a solid foundation for the company to move into the 1930s with their majestic Twelve.
