The W123 compact range of Mercedes-Benz cars, introduced in January 1976 and in production for the next decade, was significantly safer, better equipped and more refined than its predecessors. In fact, it became the most successful model to wear the famous Three Pointed Star to date, with more than 2.6 million examples hitting the road before being replaced by the W124 in 1985. Sold in both four-cylinder (200/230) and six-cylinder (250/280) versions, along with an extensive range of diesels, the W123 was available in both sedan and estate guises and in keeping with tradition, a stylish two-door coupe was also available. Of pillarless design and on a shorter (2710mm) wheelbase, the W123 coupe featured more luxurious interior appointments, power steering as standard and the 280CE model, with its fuel injected twin-cam 2.8-litre six-cylinder engine, topped out the range. The M110/988 engine developed 185 bhp at 5800 rpm and was capable of pushing the 280CE to speeds in excess of 200 km/h. Built in relatively small numbers between 1977 and 1985, the 280CE offers surprisingly strong performance from the gutsy six, typically Germanic build quality and safety at a very affordable price.
