The name 'De Ville' first appeared on a production Cadillac as a trim level for the Series 62 in 1949. Initially available in two-door 'Coupe de Ville' form, it was one of the earliest pillarless American coupes in existence. It took until 1956 before the Series 62 range was expanded to include the 'four-door hardtop' Sedan de Ville. It was an immediate success; outselling the standard-trim sedan by such a large margin that the De Ville badge was given its own series in 1959. These series became a dynasty, with eight subsequent generations lasting through to 2005.The fourth generation arrived in 1971, re-designed along with other GM full-size vehicles for that model year, is perhaps best known for its incredible interior space- indeed, they were unmatched for interior width until the early 1990s. Early versions sported the familiar 472ci big-block backed up by GM's TH-400 three-speed auto, while an even larger 500ci engine was introduced in 1975.
