The MG C GT Coupe was introduced in 1967 alongside an open-topped sibling. Designed to build further on the strengths of its legendary predecessor, the B-series, it also addressed perhaps its most insistent weakness- a lack of power. The C introduced a 2912cc overhead valve inline-6 which was similar to that found in older Austin-Healeys, though it ran a seven main-bearing crankshaft instead of four to aid reliability. Rated at 150 bhp, it gave the MGC a vast straight-line speed advantage over the 95 bhp MGBs, which continued alongside. MGCs were thoroughly re-engineered, with bigger brakes, telescopic dampers, a larger fuel tank and stronger transmissions all included. Available with an overdrive-equipped, all-synchro (on forward gears) four-speed manual, brochures suggested it could reach 125mph in coupe form, while there was also the option of a 3-speed Borg-Warner 35 automatic transmission. Substantially rarer than an MGB, there were said to have been 9002 produced in total.
