The radical fourth-generation Camaro made its debut as a 1993 model, with the aerodynamic body initially available only as a coupe. With many of the compound curved panels formed from moulded composite plastics, the new Camaro certainly looked futuristic but underneath retained the traditional front engine/rear drive layout, albeit with a revised chassis structure to improve rigidity and a new front suspension incorporating a long-short control arm setup for more camber. Available with a choice of engines, the base Camaro was fitted with a 160bhp (120kw) 3.4 litre V6 but one could option the same LT1 350ci V8 as found in the Corvette. Transmission choices included five and six-speed (Z28) manuals or an electronically controlled four-speed automatic. The list of standard equipment was impressive, with driver and passenger side airbags, anti-lock brakes, premium sound system and GM's PASS-KEY II anti-theft system. The air conditioning system came with a first - it was charged with non-ozone depleting R-134a refrigerant. There was also an optional targa-top which added an element of fresh-air motoring to go with the performance.
