High up on the list of all-time popular classic cars is the MGB roadster, a sports car designed to appeal to the hearts - and wallets - of enthusiasts around the world. The MGB's popularity remains as high now as when it was launched back in 1962- vindication that Abingdon's designers certainly fulfilled their brief to produce a replacement for the successful MGA that could offer lively performance, excellent handling and above all, lots of fun at the wheel. Critically acclaimed on its debut at the 1962 Earls Court Motor Show, the MGB was built around a pressed-steel monocoque to give a much stiffer, stronger structure for improved handling, more interior space and less weight. Powering the MGB was a 1.8-litre version of the dependable B-series engine through a four-speed gearbox (overdrive was optional) while creature comforts were enhanced, with wind-up windows, more comfortable seats and a neat folding hood. Apart from simply enjoying the experience of driving your car, ownership of an MGB offers many other rewards, including entry to a thriving club scene, along with the support of a huge number of specialists who make on-going maintenance a pleasure compared to most other classics. Parts are inexpensive and the home mechanic can easily tackle all but the most complex jobs.
