The first generation of America's only sports car, the Corvette, had undergone a number of significant changes by the early 1960s, with revised styling and the introduction of the classic small-block V8 in 1955 which endowed the car with performance to match the exciting exterior. For 1961, exterior styling was further enhanced with the removal of the 'teeth' in the grille and a dramatic 'boat tail' rear end with four tail lights. 1962 was the last of the solid axle 'C1' Corvettes and provided further refinements, with a heater finally becoming standard equipment and still more powerful engines. Under the bonnet the legendary 327ci V8 made its debut, a bored and stroked development of the previous 283. In base form it produced 250bhp, with the top-level 'Fuelie' delivering a full 360bhp. Sales on the year increased some 40 per cent, with total 'Vette production reaching 14,531 units.Today these late-series C1s are well sought after, particularly the 1962 cars with the introduction of the 327 combined with levels of refinement not seen in the earlier vehicles, but still retaining a link to the original's groundbreaking style.
