Description
First released in 1968, the Jaguar XJ series has for generations been the model designation for the flagship model in the Jaguar range. Initially 2.8 and 4.2-litre versions of the venerable Jaguar XK straight-six were adopted, while the independent rear suspension from the Mark X was carried over, adding refinement. The same basic XJ shape prevailed over three series until 1992, and was also used as the basis for the more upmarket Daimler Sovereign range. From 1972 the 5.3-litre V12 engine was introduced to the XJ range and from 1983 the Daimler Sovereign badge bowed out, the car being renamed the Jaguar Sovereign- it was still seen as the flagship XJ, and was the only Jaguar XK still available with the V12. These Eighties Sovereigns were always renowned for their supreme wafting ability, seating four adults comfortably, but they also provide stirring performance when required, and provide a nice contrast when compared with the equivalent BMW or Mercedes.
