Succeeding the popular E21 3-series in 1982, the E30 continued to build on the strengths that made the previous small BMW so well-received. With four body-styles available (though not in all countries), there was a 3-series that could suit a wide range of buyers- with a four-door sedan, two-door coupe, a Touring wagon and a more exclusive cabriolet styled by Baur, a German coachbuilder who provided the conversions with full BMW blessing. The E30 Baur continued a long line of Baur-converted open BMWs, an association which began back in the sixties with the BMW 1600. Other than the roof-top conversion, the Baur shared mechanical specifications with the 3-series model it was based on (with the 323i being the most prolific version found in Australia). This meant a silky smooth 2.3 litre version of the BMW straight-six, with 112kw and a 5-speed manual transmission (optional auto).
