Datsun's 200 B was designed as a mid-sized car for the Australian market. Introduced in 1977, the models (sedan, coupe and station wagon) were initially imported from Japan until localised production came on stream in 1978. Available with a 1952cc engine producing 72kW, it provided reliable, tough, inoffensively styled transport for many of Australia's young families- and was the best-seller in its segment until the Mitsubishi Sigma took over the mantle. Today the initial-run Japanese built cars are more sought-after as they house independent rear suspension rather than the trailing-arm arrangement implemented in locally built vehicles, primarily for cost reasons. Station wagons had a leaf-sprung axle designed to cope with load-bearing in harsh Australian conditions. The 200B and its various forms survived until 1981 when it was succeeded by the Bluebird and a new era for Datsun/Nissan began.
