1938 Oldsmobile Sedan

General Motors-Holden was really hitting its stride in the late thirties, as remnants of the Great Depression faded away. They had completed their own vehicle assembly plant in Port Melbourne and had also installed a power press into their Elizabeth South Australia body facility. This meant local assembly of American GM products was in full swing with Buick, LaSalle and Cadillac models all being offered locally in 1938. Also available were six and eight cylinder Oldsmobile chassis, locally assembled in Sedan and Coupe forms. The Olds brand had returned to our shores in 1934 after being dropped through the depression years. According to the Oldsmobile Club complete assembled chassis and drivelines were imported from the States, with Holden forming the appropriate body and matching to the chassis in the appropriately ordered colour. Fawn leather trim was fitted to both six-cylinder sedans and coupes, with brown leather optional in the eight-cylinder sedan (no coupes were offered in this form). These locally assembled GM vehicles played an important part in the development of the Australian car industry as a whole, and are much revered with their ability to provide reliable, stylish transport with good club support and American aftermarket parts supply.
