The first BMW M5 created a new automotive category when it made its debut at the the Amsterdam Motor Show in February 1985. Based on the E28 5 Series and combining the practicality of a full four-door sedan with the performance of a sports car, it was the original 'Genteman's Express', with delighted owners baiting Porsche drivers on the German Autobahns.

Utilising the chassis of the 535i, powered by a 210kW evolution of the 3.5 litre straight six cylinder engine developed for the BMW M1 and equipped with a five-speed Gertrag gearbox, while stiffer suspension and larger diameter disc brakes completed the high performance package.

In its era, the E28 M5 was the fastest production sedan in the world. It would accelerate from 0-100km/h in 6.2 seconds and had a top speed of 246km/h - figures which still place it in the top echelons of performance sedans today.

The E28 M5 today remains amongst the rarest of all regular production derived M models. M5s were handbuilt in Munich prior to the 1986 Motorsport factory summer vacation. Thereafter, M5 production was moved to Garching where the remainder were built by hand.
